Parker Street expects dramatic increase in demand for school supplies

HALIFAX – The Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank is worried they may not be able to help all low income families, as demand for school supplies has increased dramatically.

The local food bank has been helping out low income families with school supplies for the past nine years, according to client service coordinator Cynthia Louis.

Louis says demand for school supplies has continued to increase over the past few years, making things more difficult to manage.

“We expect that requests for school supplies will definitely increase, and we’ve also had an increase of clients coming into the food bank. So we hope we’re going to be prepared to facilitate the requests that will be coming in,” said Louis.

Louis says the food bank is calling on people and local businesses to start holding school supplies drives or donate financially to help meet the demand.

“We’re seeking donations from school supplies to monetary donations. Whatever donations that they can give, it would be much appreciated,” she said.

Last year Parker Street expected 700 students to register for its back to school program, but fell short when 750 families required help.
