The firefighting community continues to mourn the death of a young member who was critically injured while training.
Skyler Blackie died Wednesday after he was injured earlier this month during a training session at the Nova Scotia Firefighters School in Waverley.
Truro Fire Chief Blois Currie told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show Blackie's death is a huge blow.
“It's hard to talk about what kind of a person he was because it's an emotional time for all of us, but he was what a firefighter should be,” said Currie.
Jim Roper, president of the Fire Service Association of Nova Scotia, said there are inherent risks in the firefighting profession.
“We work extremely hard to mitigate those risks but in some cases, once in a while, we fail in some way,” said Roper.
Blackie's family released a statement on his death expressing their gratitude for the support they've received during this difficult time.
“We lost our son, brother, husband, and uncle, while the world lost a truly beautiful soul and dedicated firefighter.” the statement said.
“On behalf of the Blackie family, we would like to thank the Truro and Halifax fire services for their support during this challenging time.”
