Nova Scotia Health warns of COVID-related phone scam

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Nova Scotia Health is warning of a COVID-19-related phone scam.

It says some people are getting automated phone calls appearing to be from public health officials.

The robocall tells the person that they have been identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive, or that they have tested positive.

The person is then told to call a phone number and leave personal information.

“Public Health does not use automated calls to notify someone they are a close contact. If you receive an automated phone call that appears to be from Public Health regarding close contacts, please do not provide any information,” Nova Scotia Health said in a news release.

Public Health does use automated calls for COVID-19 test results.

“However, it will ask you to verify your identity with the last four digits of your health card and your birth date,” Nova Scotia Health added.

“You will not be asked to call a number back to provide additional personal information.”
