Dalhousie University team makes breakthrough in brain cancer research

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Researchers at Dalhousie University have designed a groundbreaking tool in brain cancer treatment.

Dr. Jeremy Brown and his team have developed the world’s first high-resolution endoscopic surgical and imaging probe.

According to university’s website, the tool allows surgeons to see and access brain tumours with ten times the resolution of conventional imaging such as MRI and CT scans.

While it is the first of its kind, Dr. Brown is already working on a secondary feature that will non-invasively vaporize cancer tissues using sound waves.

An associate professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Brown was inspired to create the device after his PhD supervisor was diagnosed with a brain tumour over ten years ago.

In Canada, 27 people are diagnosed with brain tumours each day, according to Dalhousie’s website.
