Mooseheads to retire MacKinnon’s number as regular season kicks off

By Mark Hodgins

It’s going to be a special night in Moose Country.

Halifax Mooseheads legend Nathan MacKinnon is in town for Friday night’s home opener as the team is set to officially retire his #22.

“You’re talking about a legend in franchise history, local boy, such an incredible legacy that he left,” said CityNews 95.7 play-by-play voice Garreth MacDonald.

A Cole Harbour native, MacKinnon’s family was also a billet family for Mooseheads players as Nathan was growing up, MacDonald said.

MacKinnon has gone on to play more than 700 games in the NHL, all with the Colorado Avalanche franchise, including a Stanley Cup win in 2022.

“(Nathan) wore number 22 with the Moose because Freddy Cabana was his billet brother,” MacDonald explained.

MacKinnon would end up leading the Mooseheads to a Memorial Cup championship in 2013.

Friday night’s ceremony is expected to happen at about 7:05 p.m.

After that, it’s Mooseheads vs. Islanders to open the 2022/23 regular season.
