Mooseheads remain perfect after 1st weekend of regular season action

The Halifax Mooseheads took to the ice at TD Station in front of a crowd of 3,100 in Saint John Saturday night, fresh off of a shootout win over Charlottetown in theregular season opener.
It wasn’t long before the Herd opened their account on the night. Antoine Fontaine opened the scoring with his 1st QMJHL goal, beating Sea Dogs netminder Justin Robinson at the 3:10 mark of the opening frame.
Owen Phillips with the assist on the goal. It wouldn’t take long for Saint John to answer when Olivier Groulx found the back of the net at the 12:21 mark while shorthanded to even up the score at 1.
The Mooseheads would move in front at the 5:53 mark of the second when Cade Moser from Linacy, Nova Scotia, tallied his first of the season while on the powerplay. Halifax native Daniel Walters with his 1st q-league point with the assist on the play. The Sea Dogs would again even the score a few minutes later when Ben Cross beat Mathis Rousseau at 10:53 of a penalty-filled second period.
The Moose regained the lead just two minutes later when Braeden MacPhee buried a pass from Shawn Carrier to put the Moose in front 3-2. Brady Schultz with the second helper on the goal.
Walters, the Mooseheads 1st round pick in this year’s entry draft, would add his first QMJHL goal early in the 3rd period when he beat Robinson at 5:55. Logan Crosby with the assist on the goal that made the score 4-2. Just 3 minutes later, the Moose were back on the scoresheet when rookie Caylen Blake buried a backhand over a sprawled-out Sea Dogs goalie to make the score 5-2, Lou Levesque and Fontaine with the helpers.
Fontaine, who scored a goal and had an assist, was named the first star of the game. Danny Walters, who also scored a goal and had an assist, was named the second star. Braeden McPhee was named the third star.
With the win, the Halifax Moosehead’s record improved to 2-0-0 early in the season, while the Sea Dogs fell to 0-2 on the 2024-2025 campaign.
The Mooseheads are off until Friday, with the five-game road trip continuing in Cape Breton. The Herd will visit Centre 200 in Sydney in the first battle of Nova Scotia contest of the season.
