Halifax Urban Folk Festival to celebrate 15 years with expanded event

By Steve Gow

It is a milestone year for the Halifax Urban Folk Festival (HUFF) and for its 15th anniversary, HUFF announced a great line-up.

Celebrated singer and songwriter Alejandro Escovedo is bringing back his award-winning talents to the stage at The Carleton in Halifax.

HUFF artistic director Mike Campbell says the 73-year-old musician was here for the event’s 10th anniversary as well.

“This will be the third time he’s played,” says Campbell. “He’s such a great guy, his show is so great and he loves it so much in Halifax so we invited him back and I’m thrilled to say he said yes.”

In addition to Escovedo, Campbell says HUFF will feature such local artists as Adam Baldwin, Rose Cousins and The Barra MacNeils’ member Lucy MacNeil.

But Campbell says people also shouldn’t miss lesser known artists like Newfoundland’s Jenina MacGillivray, who was born in Cape Breton.

“She’s won a bunch of Music Newfoundland Awards and she’s being backed up by a band that routinely sells out our place, The Burning Hell,” he explains. “That would be the last show of HUFF on Sunday night and as great as she is, a lot of people will not have heard of her.”

While most shows take place at host venue The Carleton, this year HUFF will have shows at three other venues around the city.

The Halifax Urban Folk Festival runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6.
