MacDonald Bridge reopens following concerns over unstable crane

The MacDonald Bridge reopened on Friday morning after a 14-hour closure that snarled traffic throughout the city on Thursday afternoon.

The MacDonald Bridge was closed just before 3 p.m. Thursday due to concerns about an unstable crane at a nearby construction site in Dartmouth.

HRM has since lifted an evacuation order around the area of Faulkner Street, Lyle Street, Windmill Road and Wyse Road. Residents are now able to return to their homes.

The Canadian Red Cross was called in on Thursday night to help the roughly 25 people forced out of their homes.

Early Friday morning, Halifax Harbour Bridges announced the MacDonald would reopen to traffic at 5:30 a.m. after getting the thumbs up from emergency officials. An update from the municipality said the crane had been stabilized, but about 20 people were still evacuated as of Friday morning.

The bridge closure led to a difficult afternoon commute on Thursday.
