A new app launched in Nova Scotia will allow residents to create a legally valid power of attorney.
The province partnered with the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia to develop and fund the tool, which lets users designate a trusted person to manage their finances and property if they are unable to do so themselves.
Heather de Berdt Romilly, executive director of the society, says the app helps people plan for the future and protect their well-being.
“Power of attorney is probably one of the most important instruments that a person can have,” she said. “Whether they are unconscious or out of the country, they can manage their affairs.”
The province says it invested $135,000 in the project to improve accessibility.
“It’s a very relevant tool that everyone should have, and to date, the cost has really been what has gotten in the way,” de Berdt Romilly added.
The app is free to use and can be accessed here.
