Halifax police kept busy with more than 1,000 calls over long weekend

The long weekend in Halifax saw numerous people arrested and weapons seized as police tackled almost 1,200 calls.

Among the calls was a situation involving a Halifax Transit bus on April 20. Officers were called to the 800 block of Portland Street in Dartmouth for an intoxicated man just before midnight.

One there, police found the 24-year-old and removed him from the bus without incident. They took a loaded firearm and charged him with:

  • Possession of a dangerous weapon to the public
  • Possession of a firearm without a license
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to a court order
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm · Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Fail to comply with conditions of a probation order

He is expected to face the offences in court at a later date. This comes after another situation that launched an investigation by the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) earlier this month.

In that incident, officers were called for an intoxicated man who possibly had a knife. The details from the province’s police watchdog say that this man was being disruptive and causing damage to the bus.

A struggle between officers and the man ensued and led to the accused sustaining an injury, which is why the SiRT is investigating.

Earlier in the long weekend, police were called to an address on Franklyn Court in Dartmouth for a dispute between two people who knew each other at 3:50 a.m. One of the men was said to have a gun.

Officers found and arrested a 32-year-old man after searching the residence and finding a gun. The accused is charged with:

  • Uttering threats
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace

That same day, police addressed another weapons call at a home in the 6000 block of Quinpool Road in Halifax.

“It is believed that between 11 and 11:30 p.m. a suspect fired two crossbow bolts through the window of the residence,” the press release reads.

Officials said there were no injuries. They are asking people to contact police if they have any details.

The last incident police mentioned in their release was about a robbery on April 20.

They were called around 10:00 p.m. to the 6100 block of North Street in Halifax, after a man with a knife demanded property from another person.

After a short search, officers were able to arrest a 32-year-old who is facing offences of robbery, assault with a weapon and weapon dangerous to public peace.
