Halifax Regional Police (HRP) say a 16-year-old boy was arrested earlier this week after threatening to bring weapons to a high school in the city.
According to officials, the accused was arrested at his home at 3 a.m. on Wednesday in connection with threats against Citadel High School and weapons were seized.
The teen, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is expected to appear in court on Thursday for charges including possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and unsafe storage (ammunition).
“Police have a presence at Citadel High School today to support students and staff,” reads a media release from Halifax Regional Police. “Police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the school and do not believe anyone else is involved in the incident.”
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, HRP Chief Don MacLean urged compassion as youths face their own struggles.
“While it is natural to react to these types of events with fear, I do urge people to also react with compassion,” said HRP Chief Don MacLean during a Thursday news conference. “Youth who consider violence as their last resort have been faced with their own struggles. It can be difficult to understand.”
