Shovels are set to go into the ground next week as construction begins on a hospital expansion aimed at improving care for Nova Scotians in the Tri-County area.
The provincial government says work is beginning next week on a new emergency department at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
The new department will have capacity for up to 30 patients at a time, more than double the current 14. It will also include space for four ambulances, two triage areas, a dedicated trauma room, mental health facilities and a children’s waiting room.
“Our emergency department team, our patients and our community have been looking forward to work getting started,” Dr. Joe Gillis, site medical lead, Yarmouth Regional Hospital, said. “We are confident it will ultimately allow for better care in a more spacious, modern environment, resulting in an enhanced patient and provider experience. Bring it on.”
The province says the project will improve care for residents of Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties.
During construction, patients will be able to access services as usual, but there could be some adjustments to parking and drop-off areas.
PCL Constructors Canada has been awarded the $77.8 million contract. The province says the final cost will be confirmed once construction is complete.
The new emergency department is expected to open in 2027.
