The RCMP is investigating a fatal crash involving two vehicles in Falmouth, N.S., on Saturday that left five dead and one in critical condition.
Shortly after 11 p.m., officers, fire services and EHS responded to a report of a collision in the eastbound lanes of Highway 101 between Hantsport and Falmouth, near Windsor.
In an update on Monday afternoon, Mounties said physical evidence shows the Honda Civic was driving in the opposite direction of traffic in the eastbound lanes when it collided with the Nissan Sentra.
RCMP said it’s been determined that officers in Kings County responded to a possible impaired driver involving the same Honda Civic around 7 p.m., but police were unable to find the vehicle.
Police say a 43-year-old male and a 45-year-old female in the Honda Civic were both pronounced dead at the scene. They were both from Falmouth.
A 45-year-old woman, from Oxford, N.S. and a 58-year-old man, from Nappan, N.S., travelling in the Nissan Sentra, were also pronounced dead at the scene.
A 50-year-old male passenger, from Oxford, was transported by paramedics to hospital and was later pronounced dead.
A 29-year-old male passenger, from British Columbia, was transported by LifeFlight and remains in critical condition.
RCMP say a collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation remains ongoing.
The eastbound lanes on Highway 101 remained closed for several hours but has since reopened.
The RCMP is asking for information on the whereabouts of the Civic before the crash and are asking for anyone with information or dash cam footage of the crash to reach out to them.
