There’s now a new way to get information from the Halifax Regional Municipality, as it phases out the use of a popular social media app.
The municipality says it has launched its official accounts on the platform Bluesky as it transitions away from using X, formerly known as Twitter.
Bluesky has been billed as an alternative to X, offering a similar experience that lets users share short posts with text, pictures and video.
Bluesky gained popularity after controversy surrounding X owner Elon Musk. Halifax regional council recently voted in favour of moving away from X for reasons including Musk aligning himself with the U.S. president while he threatened Canada’s sovereignty.
HRM says the Bluesky accounts will now feature information previously posted on X, including project updates, special events and notices during storms or emergencies.
The city says it will officially end its use of X by July 14.
Other municipal organizations, such as Halifax Water, Halifax Regional Police and Halifax Public Libraries, are not part of the transition to Bluesky as they manage their social media strategies separately from the municipality.
