The first of two new clinics opened in Dartmouth and, when fully operational, will help thousands of people.
Located at 230 Wyse Rd., the Dr. Maria Angwin Memorial clinic will offer primary care, gynecology, obstetrics, urology and midwifery. It will also help connect patients to other programs like the Nova Scotia Sisterhood and Nova Scotia Brotherhood, both free programs specifically designed to help Black women and men access health care in the community.
The province said that it will have the capacity to help more than 6,400 patients.
“As a family doctor who has had a rewarding career in Dartmouth north for more than 40 years, I am proud of the strong sense of community and committed leaders that have developed here,” Dr. Janet Howard, family physician, Albro Lake Medical Clinic, said. “I am thrilled to see this community receive the resources they need to thrive.”
Primary care services opened June 17 with four family doctors, a family practice nurse, nurse practitioner and five additional support staff.
The rest of the programs and services will roll out over June and July.
The second facility on Windmill Road is under construction and set to be completed in 2027.
“This new facility enables us to effectively support the health and well-being of women and families in the community, where they live and work,” LeeAnn Larocque, acting Vice-President, Clinical Care, IWK Health, said in the press release.
The clinic is named after Dr. Angwin, who became the first woman licensed to practice medicine in the province in 1884. She dedicated her career to women’s health and preventive medicine.
