A Nova Scotia RCMP officer, who is already facing multiple sex-related offences, is facing a new sexual assault charge.
According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) it received a referral from the RCMP after a woman said she was sexually assaulted by one of their officers in May 2024. The two were known to each other.
On Monday, Constable William McNutt was charged with sexual assault and will appear in provincial court in Shubenacadie in August.
Meantime, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Dennis Daley released a statement on Monday, saying they are fully cooperating with SiRT.
“These additional criminal charges against Cst. McNutt are extremely alarming and distressing,” he said. “The RCMP takes all allegations of misconduct seriously, and our employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that exceeds the high expectations Canadians rightly have of us.”
This all comes after SiRT had already laid multiple sexual assault charges against McNutt last year.
In January 2024, he was suspended from his duties after the RCMP reported he was facing allegations of sexual misconduct in connection with incidents in 2023.
That resulted in the SiRT laying three counts of sexual assault against him, as well as uttering threats and overcoming resistance to commit an offence.
McNutt was later charged with two additional sexual offences stemming from an alleged sexual assault in the summer of 2019.
