Wildcats edge Mooseheads 5–4 to snap Halifax’s win streak

The Halifax Mooseheads’ three-game win streak came to an end Saturday night with a 5–4 loss to the Moncton Wildcats at Scotiabank Centre.

Moncton opened the scoring with back-to-back goals. Alex Mercier struck less than three minutes into the contest, sliding the puck past Owen Bresson, and Kuzma Voronin added to the lead on the power play. Halifax responded late in the first period when Amelio Santini buried a one-timer past Rudy Guimond with 3:29 remaining. Cameron Minella sparked the breakout for the Herd, finding Caylen Blake on the left wing. Blake carried the puck into the offensive zone before setting up Santini in front of the net.

The Mooseheads tied the game early in the second period when the puck took an odd bounce off the boards and landed on the stick of Oleg Kulebyakin, who made no mistake beating Guimond. Spencer Thornborough appeared to restore Moncton’s lead, but after a brief review, the goal was disallowed due to contact with Bresson. However, with less than seven minutes remaining in the frame, Grayden Robertson-Palmer scored his first QMJHL goal to put the Wildcats back in front.

Halifax responded 1:31 into the third period when Eddy Doyle fired a shot on net and Danny Walters tipped the puck past Guimond. Moncton responded with two unanswered goals from Niko Tournas and Simon Binkley. With 1:37 left in regulation and the Mooseheads’ net empty, Liam Kilfoil scored his first goal with the Herd since returning from the Detroit Red Wings development camp, but the comeback fell short.

With the loss, Halifax drops to 5-3 on the season.

Mercier earned first star honours with a goal and two assists for Moncton. Walters was named second star for Halifax with a goal and an assist, while Aiden Diamond took third star.

The Mooseheads return to Scotiabank Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 15, to host the Victoriaville Tigres. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with live coverage on 95.7 NewsRadio. Garreth MacDonald will have the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
