The two youngest teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League faced off at Scotiabank Centre on Wednesday night, with the Halifax Mooseheads defeating the Victoriaville Tigres 4–2 in their first meeting of the season.
Halifax dominated the opening period, scoring three goals in just 62 seconds. Oleg Kulebiakin opened the scoring at 7:34, capitalizing on a rebound after Eddy Doyle’s shot was stopped by Tigres goaltender Gabriel D’Aigle. Doyle had taken a pass from Daniel Walters, who received the puck from Jasu Mensonen.
Shawn Carrier doubled the lead 43 seconds later, taking a feed from Quinn Kennedy and snapping a shot past D’Aigle. Just 19 seconds after that, Caylen Blake buried a rebound from Will Bent to make it 3–0 Mooseheads.
Victoriaville responded early in the second period, with Alexey Vlasov scoring his sixth of the season. But Liam Kilfoil restored Halifax’s three-goal cushion at 16:54, picking up the puck from Connor MacPherson at the blue line and firing a shot past D’Aigle.
In the third, Egor Shilov threw a puck on net that slipped past Owen Bresson, cutting the lead to 4–2. Halifax held on for the win.
With the victory, the Mooseheads improved to 6-3-0 on the season.
Halifax swept the three stars of the game. Bresson earned first-star honours with 29 saves, Kilfoil was named second star with a goal and an assist, and Carlos Händel took third-star recognition.
The Mooseheads return to Scotiabank Centre on Friday, Oct. 17, to face the Newfoundland Regiment for the first time in franchise history.
