One child dead following Hwy. 104 collision

A collision on Highway 104 resulted in the death of one child prompting RCMP to investigate.

Police say they were called, along with fire services and EHS, shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday. They were responding to a report of a collision on the highway near Dagger Woods and Pomquet Monks Head roads.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a collision occurred between a car and a large farm vehicle or construction vehicle.

The four occupants of the car, a black Toyota Rav 4, were transported to hospital by EHS. One passenger, a child, was pronounced dead at hospital.

RCMP say the other vehicle fled the scene. Investigators later located the vehicle believed to be involved, and it has now been seized for investigation.

A collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service is also involved.

The investigation is ongoing.

Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who was travelling on Hwy 104 during the evening of Nov. 1 and may have seen either vehicle involved. Anyone with information can contact Antigonish County District RCMP. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
