A former emergency room doctor at the Cumberland Regional Health Centre in Amherst is facing additional sexual assault charges, as the investigation now reaches into three provinces.
In August, Sanjeev Sirpal was charged with one count of sexual assault in connection with an incident alleged to have happened in January during an assessment at a hospital emergency room.
On Friday, police said following further reports and investigation, Sirpal was arrested at the Edmunston Police Force headquarters on Nov. 4, and is facing five additional counts of sexual assault.
“These new charges are also associated to his employment as a doctor in hospital emergency rooms and are under investigation by Cumberland County District RCMP, Sackville, NB, RCMP Detachment, and Edmundston, NB, Police Force,” reads the RCMP media release.
Police believe there could be more victims where Sirpal has practiced, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec.
“Investigators appreciate the courage that it takes for someone to come forward and share their experience,” says Cst. Heather Lourie, Cumberland County Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit. “Victims can contact police and discuss an incident before making a decision to participate in the investigation and court process.”
