Halifax drops 4-3 shootout decision to Moncton in QMJHL action

The Halifax Mooseheads fell short during a shootout Saturday, losing 4-3 to the Moncton Wildcats at Scotiabank Centre.

The teams traded goals in the first period. Shawn Carrier opened the scoring for Halifax on the power play, taking a pass from Carlos Händel and blasting a one-timer past Rudy Guimond. Moncton’s Alex Mercier tied the score at 17:58, getting the puck in close and beating netminder Owen Bresson.

Mercier appeared to add his second of the game later in the period, but after a brief video review it was ruled offside, keeping the game tied at one.

Quinn Kennedy restored the Mooseheads’ lead on the power play at 5:50 of the second period, ripping a shot from the left-wing faceoff circle. Preston Lounsbury tied the game shorthanded after Bresson stopped Teddy Mutryn’s initial shot; but Lounsbury buried the rebound for his fifth of the year. Halifax regained the lead late in the period when Connor MacPherson took a net-front pass from Daniel Walters and snapped a shot past Guimond at 19:06.

In the third, Wildcats forward Gabe Smith was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for a blindside hit on Händel that sent the German defenceman to the Mooseheads’ locker room, though he later returned. Moncton tied the game at 13:24 when Lounsbury was awarded a penalty shot after Malik L’Italien tried to stop his breakaway. Lounsbury made no mistake, beating Bresson on the backhand to force overtime.

After a scoreless extra frame, the game went to a shootout. Halifax failed to score, and Moncton earned its 11th win of the season.

With the shootout loss, Halifax falls to 11-6-1-1.

Carrier was named first star for Halifax with a goal and an assist. Second star went to Lounsbury for his two goals, while Guimond earned third star with 30 saves in the Moncton win.

The Mooseheads return to action Wednesday, Nov. 19, when they face the Quebec Remparts in the first of a six-game road trip.
