Mooseheads fall in lopsided loss to the league-leading Chicoutimi

The Halifax Mooseheads lost 9-3 to the league-leading Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Saturday.

The Mooseheads opened the scoring at 6:27 of the first period when Oleg Kulebiakin fired a sharp-angled shot past Chicoutimi goaltender Raphaël Précourt for his 17th of the season. The Saguenéens controlled the remainder of the frame as Jacob Gomez and Émile Guité beat Owen Bresson to give Chicoutimi the lead. Daniel Walters was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct at 16:52 after making a kicking motion toward an opposing player, resulting in a power-play goal by Peteris Bulans.

Mathieu Taillefer left the game in the second period after a knee-on-knee collision with a Saguenéens player during the opening frame.

In the second, Amelio Santini and Liam Kilfoil scored early to tie the contest. Santini snuck a puck past Précourt on the penalty kill, and Kilfoil tipped a Shawn Carrier shot into the Chicoutimi net on the power play. The Saguenéens restored their two-goal lead heading into the third with goals from Maxim Massé and Emmanuel Vermette.
