N.S. announces food security grants funded by sale of American alcohol

The provincial government says a new grant program, funded by the sale of U.S. alcohol products, will soon open for applications.

The Feeding Communities Fund will give one-time funding to support things like meal programs, community fridges and pantries, mutual aid groups and affordable food programs.

Earlier this winter, the premier announced the sale of booze that had been pulled from shelves amid the trade war with the U.S., saying $4 million would be raised from the sales.

“Today’s announcement is about turning the sale of U.S. alcohol products into meaningful, community-level impact, putting food on kitchen tables across the province,” said Premier Tim Houston. “The grant program ensures food-security organizations of all sizes, inside and outside traditional food banks, have an opportunity to access this support.”

The province says the fund will provide $2 million to “identified organizations”, or those known to government. More than 40 organizations in the Halifax area will be part of that funding.

The other $2 million will be made available for other food distribution or meal program organizations, with applications set to open on Monday, December 29 and close on January 29.

Government says eligible groups will include non-profit societies, community organizations that are registered with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies, and federally registered charities or not-for-profit corporations.
