U18 Women’s World Championship gives Cape Breton economic boost

A major hockey tournament kicked off this past weekend, hosted by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) with thanks to some federal financial support.
Sydney Glace Bay MP Mike Kelloway announced that $250,000 of federal funding is being provided to help the CBRM host the IIHF U18 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Membertou and Sydney.
The contribution will assist the CBRM and its co-host, the Cape Breton Blizzards, with venue preparation, event coordination and marketing.
The tournament, which began on Saturday, is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the region and boost economic activity.
Kelloway says the championship is a celebration of young athletes and the future of women’s hockey and it strengthens local pride and positions Cape Breton as a welcoming year-round destination.
The tournament features eight teams and 21 games over seven days at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre and Centre 200.
