Late rally lifts Mooseheads to 5-4 overtime win over Remparts

Shawn Carrier was the hero for Halifax as the Mooseheads defeated the Quebec Remparts 5-4 in overtime in a Sunday matinee matchup at the Scotiabank Centre.

The Mooseheads scored the lone goal of the first period at 9:05, as Quinn Kennedy stripped a Remparts player of the puck, crossed the ice and fired a shot past the glove of netminder Benjamin Lelièvre.

Quebec responded with three goals in the second period. Antoine Dorion tied the contest at 1:11, Thomas Charbonneau threw a puck on net that beat Owen Bresson at 6:18, and Egan Beveridge extended the lead to two on the power play at 18:35, roofing the puck past Bresson.

Tempers boiled over midway through the second period when Remparts forward Ryan Howard made contact with Bresson, sparking a skirmish in the Mooseheads’ end. Quebec’s Charlie Morrison and Halifax’s Lincoln Waugh were both assessed five-minute majors for fighting and game misconduct.

In the third period, the Mooseheads fired back. Liam Kilfoil chipped a puck past Lelièvre at 4:13 to bring Halifax within one. Oleg Kulebiakin then found Kennedy at the right-wing faceoff circle, where he fired a shot into the Remparts’ net to tie the contest at three. At 8:46, Daniel Walters gave the Mooseheads their first lead since the opening period, fighting through net-front traffic and finding the back of the Quebec goal.

Overtime was required after Nikita Ovcharov banked the puck off Bresson and into the Mooseheads net at 10:57 of the third to tie the game once again.

In overtime, Carrier picked up the puck in his own end before powering up the ice, cutting through the Remparts’ defence and sending a backhand shot between the pads of Lelièvre to secure the victory for the Herd.

With the win, Halifax improves to 25-26-3-3 on the season.

Kennedy was named first star of the game with two goals and an assist. Dorion earned second star honours with a goal and an assist for Quebec, while Carrier was awarded third star with a goal and an assist.

The Mooseheads return to the Scotiabank Centre on Thursday, March 5, continuing their final homestand of the season as they welcome the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.

Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on 95.7 NewsRadio, with Garreth MacDonald hosting the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
