Dalhousie University to build new campus in India

Dalhousie University has teamed up with two of India’s top research institutions to create a new campus.

Construction on the Tirupati Tri-Institutional Global Innovation Campus is planned in phases over the next decade. The campus in the eastern city of Tirupati is part of the federal push to connect Canada and India through innovation and research.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said in a release that the strategy will drive economic growth and reinforce the ties between the two countries.

“We’re proud to be working with exceptional partners in IIT Tirupati and IISER Tirupati to build a collaboration that connects research, talent, and industry in ways that support shared prosperity in both Canada and India,” said Dalhousie President Kim Brooks in a statement on the university’s website.

There are two separate agreements signed by the two partners. The first will see the support of a dual nursing degree program that includes credentials in both countries and clinical experience in Canada. This will help bring a potential pathway to nursing in Nova Scotia.

The second will host a collaborative approach in digital agriculture, climate-resilient farming and aquaculture. It will focus on joint research between the universities.

Plans for the collaborative research campus were announced Saturday in Mumbai at an event that also included Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Dalhousie and the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto and McGill University were invited to join the prime minister’s delegation, which is seeking to build deeper economic ties between the two countries.
