Police arrest man on weapons charges connected to emergency alert

Nova Scotia RCMP say they have charged a man with a series of firearm offences in Yarmouth.

According to Yarmouth Town RCMP, officers responded to a fight between two people near the intersection of Forest and William streets on Friday and determined one of them was in possession of a firearm.

A public safety alert was then issued directing people to shelter in place.

A 30-year-old man was arrested in his home a couple of hours later, and the alert was lifted.

The RCMP say in a release that a shotgun was seized in the home.

The man is facing 16 offences including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and tampering with a firearm serial number.

He also had an outstanding warrant associated to an unrelated investigation.

The suspect appeared in court on Monday and remains in custody pending future court appearances.
