At the Place of Ghosts wins big at Screen Nova Scotia Awards

Sk+te’kmujue’katik (At the Place of Ghosts) walked away as the big winner at this year’s Screen Nova Scotia Awards.
Held Saturday night at the Halifax Convention Centre, filmmaker Bretten Hannam’s supernatural thriller took home the Best Feature Film Award, beating out the surprise box office smash, Little Lorraine and other nominees.
The film follows two Mi’kmaw brothers who are forced to confront their past trauma when a malevolent spirit begins tormenting them.
Actor Skyler Cope also won the Groundbreaking Performance Award for his role in the film, which is currently playing at Park Lane Cinemas in Halifax.
Hosted by actor and comedian Shaun Majumder (formerly of This Hour Has 22 Minutes), the event marked the 12th year for the Screen Nova Scotia Awards, held to celebrate the talent, creativity and productions behind the province’s film and television industry.
Other notable winners from this year’s event were Pretty Blind for Best Scripted Television series. Starring Jennie Bovard, the AMI show is Canada’s first-ever comedy about blindness led by and about its lead actor.
According to a release, the Best Unscripted Television Series Award went to Cousu from Connexions Productions, a French docuseries that “follows actress and host Karine Vanasse as she explores the world of fashion, its origins, and its traditions.”
Amazon’s We Were Liars won the first-ever award for Best International Production, a new prize handed out to global movies or series that film their productions in Nova Scotia.
