Wildfire northeast of Halifax ‘being held’: N.S. officials

Fire crews in Nova Scotia were able to stop a wildfire northeast of Halifax from spreading further on Sunday after it spent days burning out of control, officials said.

The province’s Natural Resources Department said the Mooseland Road fire was “being held” and remained at an estimated size of 14.5 square kilometres.

Ground crews were continuing fire suppression efforts while fire-fighting aircraft remained grounded but available if needed, the department said.

Residents of about 100 cottages, cabins and homes along Mooseland Road were able to return to the area after the province lifted an evacuation order Sunday morning.

However, the province said a barricade has been set up for a section of Mooseland Road for safety reasons, so some residents may require detours to get home.

There will be no access for drivers through the barricaded area until Natural Resources can safely operate in the area with traffic on the road, the province said.

Local and provincial crews have been fighting the fire since Wednesday.
