Province asking people to prepare for flooding with torrential rain expected

The minister of emergency management is asking Nova Scotians to prepare for flooding as the province is expected to receive a significant amount of rain over the next few days.
Kim Masland said in a statement that modelling predicts anywhere from 40 to 100 milimetres of rain is possible on Wednesday and Thursday.
“I encourage all residents to take this forecast seriously and begin preparing now for the possibility of localized flooding and road disruptions,” she said. “Heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems, cause rivers and streams to rise, and create dangerous conditions on roads.”
Environment Canada is warning that Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax County west and parts of the Atlantic coast will see the most impact. It’s set to start Wednesday morning and last into Thursday afternoon.
“The heaviest rain is expected to fall on Wednesday morning before tapering to steady drizzle or showers in the afternoon,” the weather agency notes.
Another round of rain is possible Thursday morning with rates of 20 to 40 mm per hour.
Thundershowers are expected to develop in some areas, which can produce heavier rainfall over short distances.
“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas,” it warns.
Marsland is asking people to prepare their emergency kits, and those who live in flood-prone areas should take additional measures.
“Emergency management officials, municipalities and first responders are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to respond as needed,” she said.
