Former Halifax lawyer charged in years-long fraud case

A former lawyer in Halifax is facing serious financial charges after police say he misappropriated and stole trust funds.

RCMP first launched the investigation in January 2019 after multiple complaints were filed against Jason Donald Boudrot, 54, and his law firm. Police dubbed the lengthy case as Project Hubris, which involved getting statements from more than 100 victims and witnesses in Canada and the U.S.

Just prior to the investigation, Boudrot was suspended by Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, and stepped down in the Nova Scotia Liberal Party after weeks earlier been chosen as its new president.

Through the investigation Mounties obtained over a dozen judicial authorizations. They searched a law office in Halifax in 2021, and began a process of gaining more records.

Now, over seven years since Boudrot was first suspended by the law society, he is charged with:

Fraud over $5,000
Theft over $5,000
Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Criminal breach of trust

The accused is expected to appear in court to face the offences on Oct. 26.
