HRP officer treated for minor injuries after altercation downtown with man

A man is facing a dozen charges after an altercation with a police officer led to the discovery of a stolen motorcycle.
On Tuesday around 7:00 p.m., a Halifax Regional Police officer was on an e-bike downtown when he noticed a man riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
The officer saw the man on Upper Water Street and while a light changed he approach the rider. According to a release, the motorcyclist became “aggressive and accelerated the motorcycle toward the officer.”
The police officer grabbed the motorcycle, which made it tip over, causing the driver to run away. He was arrested by more police who arrived at the situation.
After checking the licence plate police discovered that the man riding it was not the registered owner. The actual owner confirmed to officials that the bike had just been stolen from a parking spot on Lower Water Street.
The officer was treated for minor injuries after the incident.
As a result, Royce Dimitre Madinsky, 39, is facing charges of:
- Motor vehicle theft – auto
- Dangerous operation of a conveyance
- Assault a peace officer with a weapon
- Possession of property obtained by crime greater than $5,000
- Operation of a conveyance while prohibited
- Obstruction/resisting police (x3)
- Flight from a peace officer
- Failure to stop after an accident
- Mischief
- Breach of probation
He appeared in a Halifax court on Thursday.
