RCMP evacuate Yarmouth campground after gun threats from man

A man from Ontario is facing several serious charges after a trailer campground on the western shore was evacuated late last week.
Police were called to a campground on Comeaus Hill Road near Melbourne, N.S. on Aug. 14 around 11:50 p.m.
Officers were told by people that a man was threatening campers and that he had firearms and was going to release his dog to attack bystanders. Police said they saw firearms inside the man’s trailer, where he barricaded himself inside.
Working with staff at the campground, RCMP helped evacuate people from the area around the trailer.
At 12:45 a.m. the man left the trailer and was arrested by officers. Police said they seized three loaded shotguns and a loaded rifle.
As a result, Cody Wayne Gauthier, 38, of Brampton, Ont., is facing the following charges:
- Assault
- Uttering threats
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Careless use of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammunition
- Unsafe storage of firearms
The accused remains in custody and is expected in a Yarmouth court on Aug. 17.
