Taking a trail that they had been down multiple times before, Jenna Galloway being pulled by her dog Timber, a five-year-old Australian Shepherd were enjoying a chilly afternoon on Feb. 2, when the unexpected suddenly happened.
Starting to feel more comfortable with the trail, Galloway had assumed they were on solid ground. However, roughly halfway through their trip the ice under her broke, revealing a frozen lake.
Unsure of what to do in the sudden collapse, both Galloway and Timber found themselves stuck in the frozen lake.
While fighting the freezing cold water, Galloway was able to pull Timber out and give him the command to move forward. Battling to stay above the water, she focused on removing her skies, then went back to giving commands to Timber.
After continuing forward and wrapping up his harness line around some twig branches, Jenna was able to use the tension created to pull herself out of the water.
After noticing her phone had fallen into the water and that no one knew where she was. Galloway says that without Timber, she isn’t sure what could have happened,
“Timber would’ve never left me. He would’ve gotten back into the icy water with me if I didn’t get out.”
For Timber’s actions, he was awarded with the Purina Animal Hall of Fame Award.
