Police watchdog says N.L. constable facing harassment charges

ST. JOHN’S — Newfoundland and Labrador’s police oversight body says it has charged a St. John’s police officer with two counts of harassment.
The Serious Incident Response Team said the charges stem from an investigation into a complaint against the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer.
The constable is facing a count of criminal harassment and a count of harassing communications, the watchdog said in a statement.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said it was informed of the pending charges on Aug. 26 and immediately suspended the officer with pay, pending the criminal proceedings.
It also said it would complete an internal disciplinary process after the criminal process was completed.
“The RNC holds its police officers to the highest standard and all complaints of officer misconduct and criminal allegations are taken very seriously,” the constabulary said in a statement. “We encourage anyone who has a complaint or concern about a police officer to file a report using the independent mechanisms available to the public.”
The officer is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 4.
The watchdog and the constabulary both said they would provide no further comment since the matter is proceeding in court.
The watchdog has a mandate to investigate serious incidents involving injury, death, sexual offence, domestic violence or any matter of significant public interest arising from the actions of a police officer in Newfoundland and Labrador.
