Slow-moving rain system set to saturate Halifax Regional Municipality

More than 24 hours before a system will enter Nova Scotia’s atmosphere, Environment Canada is telling people it will be a wet start to the weekend.

The weather agency notes that a developing and slow-moving storm is expected to bring significant rainfall to Halifax Regional Municipality. The tropical moisture is expected to sustain the heavy downpours, it notes.

The storm is set to start Thursday evening and last into Saturday. Meteorologists are predicting rainfall rates of 10 to 20 millimetres per hour in some areas.

“Thunderstorms may develop over some areas, producing locally heavier rainfall,” the message reads. “There is some uncertainty as to where the highest rainfall amounts will occur, but the potential exists for significant totals over some locations.”

Officials are asking people to avoid travelling or adjusting their plans during the heaviest rain. Water pooling on roads could impact vehicles.
