RCMP charge teacher with several assaults of students in Pictou County

Mounties are laying charges against a 53-year-old teacher in Pictou County after reports that several students were assaulted.

According to a press release, RCMP said they started investigating after a report that a teacher assaulted a student on Sept. 10. It happened at an elementary school, Dr. W.A. MacLeod Consolidated School, in Riverton, N.S.

Through the investigation, officers said several other victims were identified from similar incidents that happened this year.

Matthew Donahoe, of Bible Hill, is facing charges of:

  • Assault (four counts)
  • Assault by choking (two counts)
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual interference
  • Administering a noxious thing

The accused is expected in a provincial court on Thursday.

Police detailed in the press release that the Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education has removed Donahoe’s access to the school and to the students after the first report happened.

“These charges are deeply troubling, and we can assure you that CCRCE takes these matters very seriously,” a statement from the board reads. “We will have supports available today, continuing into next week for students. The school has notified families that the individual has been placed on leave as the RCMP continues its investigation.”

Officials believe there may be more victims, and they want people to reach out to speak to police.

“You and your loved ones will be heard, supported, and treated with respect,” says Cst. Daniel Ronaghan, Pictou County District RCMP General Investigation Section. “We want you to know that you can reach out to discuss the right process, pace, and resources.”

Further support for victims are available through RCMP victim services and the school board.
