Adopt Me: Suzy loves to chase butterflies

She can be timid around new people

CityNews Halifax, in partnership with the Dartmouth SPCA, brings you a regular feature highlighting a special pet that is in need of adoption.

Shepherd mix (20 kgs)
Female Spayed
~5 years old
Children 16 years and older
Option to be adopted with Kenmore or to a home with a well socialized dog.

Suzy is playful, friendly with dogs and cats and loves to run in the grass, chase butterflies, fetch apples and play wrestle with her pack. After a good romp around the yard, she is content to snooze away the work day and is not destructive. As with many of this group, she can be very timid, suspicious and fearful around new people. Her new people will need to earn her trust and love slowly and patiently. Once she trusts you, her goofy personality shines through and she will show you her fun side!

Prior to coming into our care, Suzy lived in a home with more than 70 dogs. As you can imagine this impacted her social skills and although extremely sweet, she is lacking confidence.

Suzy is not leash trained so she cannot be taken on outings, car rides or to parks. Please be aware that it may be many months before she can be safely walked on a leash.

She has a medium energy level; she likes playing with other dogs and is equally happy working away on a chew toy or just hanging out on the couch. Suzy dislikes being cornered or pressured and is a follower of other dogs. Little by little she is also learning to follow people too.

Left to her own devices she can be a bit of a digger and an escape artist, so a very secure yard is a must, away from cars, busses and other urban hazards.

Suzy requires:

  • a dog experienced quiet home with a predictable routine. no elevators or apartments, no high traffic areas or urban centers another friendly, playful, well socialized dog or two in the home that she can learn from and bond with
  • a fully fenced, secure yard, ideally large enough for a good run around
  • patient, committed adopters who are willing to invest time in building Suzy's trust and are comfortable with a gradual transition to her forever home
  • a home with a good understanding of positive reinforcement. She is too timid for heavy handed training methods
  • children over 16

Suzy is currently in foster care. Please contact us at 468-7877 Option 6 for more information or at to book an appointment to meet her.
