Ferry rides between P.E.I. and N.S. resume on boat that was grounded

The ferry between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island that was grounded in a channel near Caribou, N.S., Sunday has resumed full service.

Northumberland Ferries Ltd. issued a statement saying inspections and tests through Sunday night and Monday morning verified there was no damage to the vessel and it would resume trips in the afternoon.

The MV Confederation experienced a “steering issue” while en route to Wood Islands, P.E.I., shortly after departing at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, which caused the ship’s captain to stop the ship and drop both anchors.

Due to tidal conditions, the boat’s location in the channel and “anchor recovery challenges,” the ferry was not able to sail back to berth for several hours. 

Ferry trips on the MV Confederation were cancelled Sunday through to Monday afternoon. Trips between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island on the MV Saaremaa 1 remained in service.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada issued a statement on Monday saying it had deployed a team of investigators to examine the MV Confederation following the grounding.
