Islanders crush Phoenix 7-2 to open QMJHL semifinal series

CHARLOTTETOWN — Xavier Simoneau scored a goal and assisted on three others for a four-point night to lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a 7-2 rout of the Sherbrooke Phoenix in Game 1 of their QMJHL semifinal playoff series Wednesday.

Zachary Roy scored a goal and added two assists and goalie Francesco Lapenna made 32 saves in the win.

Xavier Parent and Israël Mianscum scored Sherbrooke’s two goals, both with the game well out of hand.

Parent’s marker came midway through the second period to stop a run of six straight Charlottetown goals while Mianscum scored with about a minute left to play in the game to make it 7-2.

Game 2 of this best-of-five series goes Thursday in Charlottetown again.

In other QMJHL playoff action Wednesday, the Quebec Remparts came back to take Game 1 of their semifinal series with the Shawinigan Cataractes, 3-2.

Defenceman Vsevolod Komarov scored with 54 seconds left in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and win the game.

Game 2 between the Remparts and Cataractes is also on Thursday, in Quebec City.
