Mask requirement to be lifted in public schools

When Nova Scotia students return from the May long weekend, they will no longer need to wear masks at school.

Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Becky Druhan says as of Tuesday, May 24, the face coverings will be recommended, but not required for students, staff, outside service providers, volunteers and visitors, and those who choose to wear them will be supported.

“As warmer weather approaches in June and classes can spend more time outdoors, and with Nova Scotia's health data and school attendance data improving, Minister Druhan said now is the time to make masks optional in schools,” the province said in a news release.

Masks and hand sanitizer will still be supplied in classrooms.

“Students, staff and visitors are also asked to continue to follow core public health measures, including getting vaccinated if eligible, staying home if feeling unwell, following the COVID-19 daily checklist, and washing and sanitizing hands frequently,” the province added.
