A McConaughey adventure and a terrifying Jordan Peele masterwork: This week’s best and biggest on Netflix

This horror flick got under my skin and stayed there.

Writer-director Jordan Peele shocked the world with his directorial debut Get Out, and anticipation was great for his next film.

Us follows a family who visit a beach retreat, only to be stalked by a family of doppelgangers. But they soon realize there are doubles of everyone wreaking havoc all over the world.

As the family fights for their lives, they are entrenched in a conspiracy they struggle to understand.

Lupita Nyong’o gives an Oscar-worthy turn, and she’s joined by Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss, both also stunning.

This is a film full of twists and frights, and I absolutely love it.

Army Of The Dead

This awesome zombie thriller follows a group of mercenaries who head into a quarantine zone for a casino heist.

With Las Vegas completely overrun by zombies, a nuke is planned to be dropped, and the group has to get the money out first.

Perhaps best known right now for his cut of Justice League, co-writer and director Zack Snyder creates an epic flick here.

With huge performances from Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell, as well as ensemble turns from Ana de la Reguera, Omari Hardwick, Theo Rossi and Tig Notaro, this is an awesome cast.

It’s 2.5 hours long, which is a bit much, but otherwise it’s a heck of a genre film.

Sahara

This explorer film perfectly encapsulated the Clive Cussler novel it’s based on.

It follows Dirk Pitt, who heads on an adventure to find a lost Civil War ship in the deserts of West Africa.

Matthew McConaughey is so much fun here, in a role that showcased some range and charisma while he was mostly just doing rom-coms.

He’s joined by Penelope Cruz and Steve Zahn, both absolutely fun, and also William H. Macy, who is perfect in everything he’s in.

It’s an action adventure you won’t want to miss, and a great nostalgic gem.

What Women Want

It’s not high art, but this adorable little romantic-comedy has spawned a spin-off and is still well-loved 21 years since its release.

Directed by the incredible Nancy Meyers, it’s about a womanizing ad executive who, after a freak accident, gains the ability to read women’s minds.

He begins to learn more about the errors of his ways and gains a new respect for women.

Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt are entirely charismatic and share great chemistry. Co-starring Marisa Tomei and Alan Alda, it’s a great little flick.

Triple 9

This heist thriller is one of the most underrated little gems to come out in the last five years.

It revolves around criminals and corrupt cops who murder a police officer as they plan a huge heist.

The flick has a pretty great cast, including Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot and Norman Reedus.

There are plenty of surprises here and the performances are hugely above-par for this kind of flick. It’s a high-octane thriller that will keep your heart pounding for its entire run-time.
