Alberta municipality touts benefits of banning plastic bags

As the city continues to explore possibilities when it comes to banning plastic bags, a municipality in Alberta that has already imposed a ban says residents in that region are generally happy with the no-plastic approach.
Halifax councillors discussed the prospect of implementing a plastic bag ban at length during Tuesday's council meeting.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Alberta initially implemented a by-law in 2010 to ban single-use bags, later modifying it in 2012 to allow some exceptions..
Adam Hardiman is a strategist with that municipality and says it's something most residents are generally in support of.
“We've had a pretty positive experience, there's been an environmental benefit and now it's part of our community,” said Hardiman, adding he's been fielding more calls recently from other municipalities interested in a similar ban. “It's part of how we live our lives now.”
As a result, Hardiman says there has been far less waste at landfills, adding they saw a reduction of 1.8 million plastic bags in the first year it was implemented.
