Chair of HRSB angry, disappointed to learn English boards will be dissolved

Although the revelation didn't come as much of a surprise, Halifax Regional School Board Chair Gin Yee says he's disappointed and angry to learn the province's English school boards will be dissolved at the end of March.

Yee called it a “sad day for democracy”, explaining to Global News the board didn't feel it was properly consulted on this issue.

“The Halifax Regional School Board hasn't met directly with the current minister of education,” said Yee. “I wish we had been able to meet so we could share our thoughts.”

HRSB did send off a letter to the province outlining its position on the possible dissolution of the boards.

Vice-Chair Linda MacKay doesn't anticipate the changes going well.

“I'm hoping that it will end up being a positive change and that I'm wrong, but all I see right now is chaos being put in the system,” MacKay told Global.

The seven English boards will remain in place and staffed, but will be renamed Regional Education Centres.

Thanks to protections offered by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the French school board is untouched by the education reforms.
