Halifax Regional Police is investigating after a crash on Connaught Avenue overnight between First and Third Streets.
At 1:26 this morning, police were called to the scene about a single vehicle accident.
The vehicle was heading northbound from Quinpool Road when the driver lost control and hit a fire hydrant, then a tree.
The hydrant was broken clear in half, and thrown more than 50 feet away from it's original position.
The driver was taken to hospital with what are believed to be life threatening injuries - while a passenger in the front seat was treated and released.
The northbound lane of Connaught is closed between Quinpool and Oak street while they investigate.
