Council to debate changes to Halifax’s taxi industry

The president of the Halifax Taxi Drivers Asssociation says he has some concerns with a review coming to council Tuesday on Halifax's taxi industry.

The year and a half long review makes several recommendations, including increasing the number of taxi owner's licenses from 1,000 to 1,600 in order to encourage more gender diversity among drivers.

Dave Buffet told NEWS 95.7 he's disappointed that despite the recommendations being made, a call for the installation of cameras in cabs is not one of them.

“Most of these alleged assaults or actual assaults occur between point A and point B, and without a camera to say nothing happened the driver has no proof,” suggested Buffet. “There's no protection for the driver, no protection for the passenger.”

Buffet also said he's concerned with the recommendation to boost the number of taxi owner's licenses as he believes this could reduce the incentive for drivers to have accessible cabs as the wait won't be as long for a taxi light.

Council will determine Tuesday whether or not to approve the recommendations.
