Farmers Dairy pulling over 30 products after reports of milk tasting like chemicals

By Katie Hartai

Farmers Dairy has initiated a voluntary withdrawal of several products in Atlantic Canada because of a chemical-tasting flavour.

The company says the withdrawal is only preventative and there are no health risks associated with consuming the products.

“Based on the reported events, this remains isolated to a brief production period, and no reported events were logged for subsequent production days,” said Farmers Dairy.

Ken Marcynuk with The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the agency has received a number of calls from concerned consumers about off-tasting milk.

“We are getting various types of flavours being reported…some Javex, some chlorine,” he says. “It is a wide range of different types of descriptions for the products.”

He says the CFIA are investigating to see what went wrong and what appropriate risk management action needs to be taken.

“Right now the company has done a withdrawal and they've pulled the product and we are investigating it,” he says. “It depends on the results of the investigation, what action we will take here.”

A full list of the products being pulled are listed on the company's website and include one per cent, two per cent and chocolate milk of various sizes.
