Food costs in Canada likely to remain on the rise: researcher

By CityNews Halifax Staff

The cost of living is on an exorbitant rise.

While nobody enjoys paying more for anything, it is something families will have to get used when it comes to putting food on the table according to a researcher with Dalhousie University.

Alyssa Gerhardt, a PHD student and research associate with the Agri-Food Analytics Lab, tells CityNews there are many factors when it comes to food prices, including supply and imports.

“Historically speaking, meat is a very volatile industry so if there's any kind of disruptions in that chain, it does have an impact on the supply as well as the price,” Gerhardt said.

Gerhardt also pointed to fresh produce on the rise, noting imports out of season from areas like the United States affect the price of vegetables.
