Give extra time: Friday expected to be one of the busiest days at Halifax airport

By Chris Halef

Christmas is just mere days away, which means many people will be scrambling to get to the airport.

Those people can expect plenty of company, as Friday is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year.

That's why the folks at Halifax Stanfield International Airport are offering some holiday travel tips to ease some of the pains people may encounter.

They are suggesting people plan ahead and allow extra time to find a parking spot, checking in with an airline and getting through airport security.

Airport spokesperson Theresa Rath-Spicer says it's very important for passengers not to wrap any gifts they may have in their carry on bags, for security reasons.

“It may be, if you wrap those gifts, they have to be unwrapped,” said Rath-Spicer. “We do actually have a gift-wrapping service post security here at Halifax Stanfield where we have our volunteers wrapping gifts, and we ask that people make a small donation.”

She also recommends people check their flight status ahead of time and make a to-do list, and make sure they check it twice.

That may ring especially true Friday, as snow in Toronto could cause delays.

Halifax, Montreal and Toronto are all under special weather statements, expecting snow on Christmas Day.
