Halifax chamber CEO heads to Montreal for NAFTA talks

By Chris Halef

With the fate of the North American Free Trade Agreement still uncertain, the CEO of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce is meeting with officials from Canada, Mexico and the U.S. to discuss the importance of keeping the deal alive.

The meetings started Sunday in Montreal, as 27 leaders from 27 chambers of commerce across the three nations came together to discuss NAFTA.

Patrick Sullivan is the CEO of the Halifax chamber and says keeping NAFTA is crucial as it impacts us here in Nova Scotia.

“When you think about Nova Scotia, almost $3.6 billion of Nova Scotia goods are exported to the United States every year,” said Sullivan. “Mexico is approximately one and a half per cent of Nova Scotia's international goods exports, so even Mexico is a pretty significant trading partner for Nova Scotia.”

Sullivan said he's very optimistic that together the three nations can work together to modernize NAFTA avoid a U.S. withdrawal.
